Pakistan’s Khawaja Muhammad Zubair has claimed the Tekken 8 title at the Esports World Cup 2026, completing a remarkable qualifier-to-champion journey with a commanding 5-0 victory over South Korea’s Yoon “LowHigh” Sun-woong in the grand final in Paris.
Zubair entered the competition through the Last Chance Qualifier, where hundreds of players competed for a final opportunity to enter the main tournament. From there, the Pakistani player produced one of the event’s standout runs, overcoming established international competitors on his way to the championship.
His campaign also included two victories over Pakistan’s eight-time EVO champion Arslan Ash. Zubair first defeated Arslan 3-0 during the group stage before the two Pakistanis met again in a dramatic semifinal. This time, Zubair edged his compatriot 5-4 to secure his place in the final.
Against LowHigh, however, the contest was far more decisive. Zubair dominated the South Korean star 5-0, completing an extraordinary run from the Last Chance Qualifier to the EWC championship.
His success brought a total payout of $300,000. The official Esports World Cup report lists $250,000 in championship prize money, with Zubair receiving an additional $50,000 Jafonso Award for winning the tournament after entering through the Last Chance Qualifier.
The victory represents another major milestone for Pakistan’s competitive fighting-game scene. Arslan Ash’s historic international success transformed perceptions of Pakistani Tekken, but Zubair’s breakthrough demonstrates that the country’s strength extends beyond a single elite player. Having two Pakistani competitors meet in the closing stages of a major global tournament further highlights that depth.
The title could also strengthen the case for greater investment in Pakistan’s esports ecosystem. International victories can attract sponsorships, professional organisations and investment in training facilities while providing emerging players with a clearer pathway towards competitive gaming careers.
Zubair’s journey is particularly compelling because of how it began. He did not arrive as a guaranteed main-event contender. He fought through the Last Chance Qualifier, defeated one of Tekken’s most decorated players twice and then swept an elite South Korean opponent in the final.
Pakistan now has another championship-level name on the international Tekken stage, reinforcing its reputation as one of the world’s most formidable competitive Tekken communities.
