Two Pakistan Customs officials were martyred after armed terrorists targeted a government enforcement vehicle near the Kohat Toll Plaza in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday, highlighting the persistent security challenges facing law enforcement personnel in the region. Another customs official sustained injuries in the attack and was shifted to hospital for medical treatment.
According to Pakistan Customs, the officials were carrying out enforcement duties when unidentified attackers ambushed their vehicle. During the assault, the assailants opened fire on the government vehicle before setting it ablaze and fleeing the scene. Security forces quickly reached the area, cordoned off the site and launched a search operation to trace those responsible.
The officials who lost their lives were identified as ASI Sajid-ul-Islam and Sepoy Javed Ahmed. Authorities said both officers were serving in the Customs Enforcement Squad and were engaged in efforts to combat smuggling and protect Pakistan’s economic interests. Their colleague, who was injured in the attack, remains under medical care.
Pakistan Customs strongly condemned the attack, describing it as an assault on officers carrying out their lawful duties. In a statement, the department paid tribute to the two officials, saying they made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the country’s economic borders and combating organised smuggling networks. It also extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured official a speedy recovery.
The attack comes amid an increase in militant violence targeting security personnel and government officials in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and neighbouring regions. Authorities have stepped up counterterrorism operations in response to a series of recent attacks, while reaffirming their commitment to pursuing those responsible for violence against state institutions.
Investigations into the Kohat ambush are ongoing, and officials have yet to announce any arrests or identify the group behind the attack. Law enforcement agencies continue search operations in the area as Pakistan Customs has vowed to carry on its enforcement mission despite the loss of its personnel.
