Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced that it will launch a nationwide political campaign on August 5, demanding the release of its founder and former prime minister Imran Khan. The date marks three years since Khan’s imprisonment, with party leaders describing the campaign as a peaceful movement focused on constitutional rule, democracy and the restoration of what they call the public mandate.
The announcement was made by PTI Secretary General Barrister Salman Akram Raja, who urged supporters across the country to participate in rallies and public activities planned for August 5. According to the party, demonstrations, public meetings and other political events will be organised nationwide as part of a sustained campaign that will continue until Khan’s release.
The campaign is expected to be one of PTI’s largest mobilisation efforts in recent months. Party leaders say they are coordinating with allied political figures to finalise the strategy, while internal consultations have focused on ensuring that demonstrations remain peaceful. Earlier this month, PTI’s parliamentary party approved August 5 as the official launch date for the movement after discussing the party’s political roadmap and the legal situation surrounding Khan and other party members.
The planned protests come amid heightened political tensions and continued legal proceedings involving PTI leaders. The party has repeatedly maintained that Khan’s imprisonment is politically motivated, while the government has defended the legal process and rejected allegations of political victimisation. Khan remains incarcerated at Adiala Jail, where PTI leaders have also raised concerns about his health and prison conditions.
As August 5 approaches, authorities are expected to make extensive security arrangements in major cities where PTI plans to hold rallies and demonstrations. The campaign is likely to become a significant political test for both the opposition party and the government, with attention focused on public turnout and the response of law enforcement agencies.
PTI has said the movement will continue through constitutional and peaceful means, while reiterating its demand for Imran Khan’s release and broader political reforms.
