The Supreme Court has ordered authorities to transfer former prime minister Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital within two days for specialist medical examination and treatment, while the federal government has announced plans to seek a review or modification of the ruling.
The August 18 order provides Khan with significant interim relief while bringing his medical care and family access under closer judicial supervision. The court directed that a specialised medical board comprising experts from five medical fields examine and treat the former prime minister.
Khan’s personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan, and his sister Dr Uzma Khan have also been permitted to participate in the medical process. The court placed restrictions on public disclosure of his medical information, making it important that reporting avoids speculation about his condition or details not formally authorised for release.
The ruling also addresses Khan’s contact with his family. Authorities have been directed to facilitate weekly family meetings as well as telephone conversations with his sons twice a week.
In addition, the court sought documentation concerning Khan’s detention and treatment. His medical reports, treatment records, case details and records relating to recent meetings are to be submitted for judicial examination. The matter is scheduled to return to the Supreme Court on September 16.
The government, however, has raised objections to part of the arrangement.
Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said the government intends to seek a review or modification of the order, arguing that Khan’s medical examination should be conducted at a government-run tertiary-care hospital rather than Shifa International.
Other government representatives have indicated that the Supreme Court’s directions will be implemented unless the court modifies its order. This means the hospital-transfer deadline remains operative while the government pursues its legal challenge.
The case carries significance beyond Khan’s immediate medical treatment. It places questions surrounding prisoner healthcare, access to relatives and compliance with judicial directions under direct Supreme Court oversight at a politically sensitive moment.
For public and social media coverage, the distinction between the existing order and the government’s planned challenge is critical.
