Food, Fuel Costs Push Pakistan’s Short-Term Inflation Above 9%

Pakistan’s short-term inflation remained under pressure in the final week of July, with the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reporting a 9.05 percent year-on-year increase in the Sensitive Price Index (SPI) for the week ending July 30. Although prices eased slightly compared with the previous week, the latest figures indicate that household budgets continue to face significant pressure from higher food and fuel costs.

According to PBS data, tomatoes recorded the sharpest annual increase, rising 228.71 percent compared with the same period last year. Onion prices increased 95.36 percent, while wheat flour climbed 78.65 percent. Diesel prices also remained significantly higher, recording an annual increase of 37.42 percent, adding to transport and logistics costs across the economy.

On a weekly basis, however, the Sensitive Price Index declined 0.91 percent, suggesting a modest short-term easing in consumer prices. Despite this improvement, the SPI has now recorded year-on-year increases for 68 consecutive weeks, highlighting the persistence of inflationary pressures affecting essential household goods.

The latest data illustrates the continuing gap between improving headline macroeconomic indicators and the cost of everyday living faced by consumers. Rising prices for food staples and fuel continue to place pressure on lower- and middle-income households, where essential items account for a significant share of monthly spending.

Economists note that sustained increases in transport and energy costs can also raise production and distribution expenses, contributing to higher retail prices across multiple sectors. Businesses dependent on logistics and fuel-intensive operations may face additional cost pressures if energy prices remain elevated.

The inflation figures come at a time when policymakers are attempting to stabilise the economy while balancing fiscal reforms and price adjustments. Analysts say continued increases in food and fuel prices could influence future wage demands, government subsidy policies and consumer spending patterns.

While the week-on-week decline offers some indication of easing price momentum, the broader trend suggests inflation remains a key economic challenge. Market observers will now watch upcoming PBS releases to determine whether recent price pressures begin to moderate or continue affecting household purchasing power in the months ahead.
