Tom Hiddleston’s emotional reflections on playing Loki have resurfaced amid growing excitement for his confirmed return in Avengers: Doomsday, highlighting the profound impact the Marvel character has had on the British actor’s life.
Hiddleston first embodied the God of Mischief in 2011’s Thor and has since become one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most recognisable figures. During a June 2025 appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, the 45-year-old actor discussed his 16-year journey with Loki.
“I just poured my heart into that show,” Hiddleston said, referring to the Disney+ Loki series. He explained that the series allowed him to explore the character more deeply than he had ever anticipated.
“It’s sort of like where I always wanted to get to and where I sometimes didn’t dare to dream I would be allowed to get to,” he shared.
Hiddleston also made it clear that stepping away from Loki would not be easy. “I’ve played this guy for 16 years. What am I gonna do, just put him on the shelf? This is my guy. He’s my companion, he’s my other self. He’s my ride or die. I love that guy.”
These comments have gained renewed attention following Hiddleston’s official confirmation that he will return as Loki in Avengers: Doomsday. His Disney+ series transformed Loki from the mischievous villain introduced in Thor into a pivotal figure in Marvel’s expanding multiverse story-line.
Marvel’s extensive Doomsday ensemble also features Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, and Paul Rudd as Scott Lang. X-Men veterans Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Kelsey Grammer are also part of the cast.
Speaking to British GQ, Hiddleston confirmed he had completed filming his scenes and lauded the strength of the movie’s central narrative. He also indicated that Loki’s character development from the Disney+ series would carry forward into the film rather than being reset for the crossover event.
In a subsequent Men’s Health interview, Hiddleston confirmed he shares scenes with other stars but declined to reveal their identities or further plot details.
Loki was notably absent from the first two Avengers: Doomsday teaser trailers, which prominently featured Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers and Hemsworth’s Thor alongside his adoptive daughter, Love. His exact role, therefore, remains a closely guarded Marvel secret.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and filmed in England, Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026, following a delay from its original May slot. With Hiddleston returning after Loki’s significant transformation, his next chapter in the MCU is anticipated to be one of the film’s most closely watched story-lines.
