Google has opened its first office in Pakistan, establishing a permanent local presence as the technology giant expands its involvement in artificial intelligence, digital skills, hardware manufacturing and Pakistan’s growing technology economy.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the office in Islamabad during a meeting with a nine-member Google delegation led by Wilson White, the company’s vice president for government affairs and public policy. US Charge d’Affaires Natalie Baker also attended the ceremony.
The opening represents a significant expansion of Google’s operations in Pakistan after years of working through partnerships and local programmes. Shehbaz described the development as an important step in the government’s broader “Digital Nation Pakistan” vision, which includes digitising government and the economy while improving technology infrastructure and skills.
Google executives said the decision reflected confidence in Pakistan’s digital potential and young workforce. Farhan Qureshi, Google’s cluster director for Pakistan, the Philippines and Thailand, said the local office would allow the company to deepen existing partnerships and create longer-term opportunities.
Skills development is expected to remain a major part of that strategy. Google says it has awarded 350,000 Career Certificate scholarships in Pakistan since 2022, while its Google Developer Groups have reached around 300,000 developers. Its AI Seekho programme has also trained 50,000 developers in generative AI and Google Cloud technologies.
The company is also increasing its involvement in Pakistan’s hardware ecosystem. Google, alongside local partners, has launched a Chromebook assembly line with a production target of 500,000 devices. Company representatives said locally assembled Chromebooks could eventually be exported to regional markets, supporting Pakistan’s ambition to develop higher-value technology exports.
Pakistan’s gaming and app-development industries are another focus. Google says its Think Apps initiative and App Design Masterclasses have supported 120 Pakistani gaming and app studios, while partnerships with the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication are targeting AI skills, startups and localised technology tools.
Google also says its various initiatives have provided digital skills to more than one million Pakistani teachers, students, developers and creators. The company estimates that its products and programmes have generated Rs3.9 trillion in economic benefits for Pakistani businesses and households and supported 965,000 jobs. These figures are company estimates rather than independent government statistics.
The physical office gives Google a more permanent platform from which to expand these programmes. Its longer-term significance, however, will depend on whether the new presence translates into greater investment, skilled employment, exports and opportunities for Pakistan’s technology companies.
For Pakistan, the opening arrives as policymakers seek to expand IT exports and position the country’s large young population for an increasingly AI-driven global economy. Google’s decision provides a high-profile vote of confidence, but converting that momentum into sustainable digital growth will require continued investment in infrastructure, education and the wider technology ecosystem.
