ADNOC Partners With OpenAI to Deploy Frontier AI Agents

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), the UAE’s state-owned energy giant, has partnered with OpenAI to introduce advanced artificial intelligence into its oil and gas operations. The agreement makes ADNOC the first energy company to deploy OpenAI Frontier, a platform designed to develop and manage AI agents. The partnership was announced on Monday at the ADIPEC energy conference, attended by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. It also involves UAE technology company G42 through its subsidiary Inception42. The system will operate using OpenAI’s GPT models and computing infrastructure located within the UAE. Financial details were not disclosed.

OpenAI Frontier to Improve Oil Production

ADNOC plans to use AI agents to improve oilfield development and investment decisions. The technology will analyse decades of information from thousands of oil wells, underground reservoirs and hundreds of production facilities. It will combine technical data with operating costs, investment requirements and commercial information. ADNOC says this could help engineers assess the value of oil reserves before extraction and prepare more efficient development plans.

AI Agents to Forecast Oil Market Changes

The platform will also monitor global oil supply, demand, prices and profit margins. Its interconnected AI agents will forecast market changes and assess their possible effects on ADNOC’s operations. ADNOC Managing Director and CEO Sultan Al Jaber described the partnership as an opportunity to explore how artificial intelligence can improve the energy industry. Sam Altman praised the UAE’s commitment to adopting advanced AI technologies.

UAE Expands Artificial Intelligence Investment

The agreement supports the UAE’s wider efforts to strengthen its artificial intelligence industry. The country appointed its first AI minister in 2017 and later introduced a national AI strategy. G42, established in 2018, has become a major technology company backed by UAE investment. The country has also secured US approval for exports of advanced Nvidia chips to expand its computing capacity.

Gulf Energy Companies Increase AI Spending

The partnership comes amid disruptions to oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, creating uncertainty for regional energy producers. Meanwhile, Saudi Aramco has announced plans to acquire a 49% stake in AI company Humain. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund will retain the remaining 51%. Aramco will contribute approximately 9.9 billion Saudi riyals ($2.6 billion), while Humain aims to develop 3 gigawatts of AI data centre capacity by 2030. For ADNOC, the OpenAI partnership could improve production planning, investment decisions and market forecasting. However, its long-term success will depend on how effectively AI performs in real energy operations.
