Pakistan has begun local assembly of Google Chromebooks at a National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation facility in Haripur, marking a new step in the country’s push to expand its technology ecosystem alongside rising IT exports.
The newly inaugurated assembly line has a reported annual production capacity of up to 500,000 Chromebooks. The project was launched in collaboration with Google and is intended to support greater access to affordable computing devices, particularly for education and digital learning.
The distinction between production capacity and actual output is important. The 500,000 figure represents how many devices the facility could potentially assemble annually at capacity, rather than the number of Chromebooks already manufactured in Pakistan.
The development follows Google’s establishment of its first office in Pakistan, strengthening the technology company’s physical presence in a market where it has already invested in digital-skills programmes, developer communities and professional certifications.
Pakistan is simultaneously seeking to increase technology training. Government-backed plans include expanding Google Career Certificate opportunities and other programmes aimed at developing skills in areas such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity and digital services.
The Chromebook project could be particularly relevant to education. Locally assembled devices may provide schools and students with a more accessible supply of laptops, although their eventual impact will depend heavily on pricing, procurement policies and how widely the devices are distributed.
The announcement also comes as Pakistan’s technology exports continue to grow.
IT and IT-enabled services exports reached $417 million in July, according to figures cited by Express Tribune. That represents an increase of approximately 18 percent compared with the same month a year earlier, reinforcing the technology sector’s growing importance to Pakistan’s export economy.
Local Chromebook assembly and growing digital-services exports represent two different sides of that technology strategy. One focuses on developing hardware assembly capacity inside Pakistan, while the other depends primarily on software, freelancing and technology-enabled services sold internationally.
The longer-term economic value of the Chromebook project will therefore depend on how much of the manufacturing process eventually takes place locally. Assembly using predominantly imported components provides different economic benefits from deeper domestic manufacturing involving locally produced components and a broader supplier network.
Affordability will be equally important. Producing devices locally does not automatically guarantee that students, schools or households will be able to purchase them at significantly lower prices.
Reliable internet connectivity, transparent public procurement and teacher training will also determine whether greater availability of devices translates into meaningful improvements in digital education.
Still, the combination of local hardware assembly, Google’s new Pakistan presence and rising IT exports signals growing activity across the country’s technology sector.
The next test will be whether Pakistan can move beyond assembly capacity and headline investment announcements toward greater local value addition, affordable technology access and sustained growth in high-value digital exports.
