Where Is Sohail Afridi? PTI Claims Former KP CM Detained Amid Governor’s Rule

The whereabouts of former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi remain uncertain after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) claimed he was taken into custody following the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in the province on Sunday, October 11.

The development comes amid a major political confrontation between the federal government and PTI, whose leadership has accused authorities of targeting elected representatives and restricting political activity.

According to PTI, Afridi was detained while leading the party’s protest march towards Islamabad. However, no official confirmation of his arrest or detention had been issued at the time of the latest report.

PTI Claims Afridi and Other Leaders Were Detained

Shafi Jan, an aide who had accompanied Afridi during the march, claimed the former chief minister had been taken into custody. PTI MNA Shahid Khattak also reported his arrest.

The party subsequently issued a statement condemning what it described as politically motivated detentions aimed at weakening PTI and undermining democratic institutions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Sources cited in the reporting suggested that Afridi and PTI provincial president Junaid Akbar were under house arrest under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO). However, authorities had not officially confirmed their detention or disclosed their locations.

PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja expressed concern over the uncertainty surrounding the two leaders, saying the party did not know where Afridi was being held or what condition he was in.

The party also claimed that KP Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati and other representatives had been detained or abducted. These allegations have not been independently confirmed.

Communication Disruptions Complicate Search

PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram said the party was struggling to establish contact with several leaders because internet services had been suspended in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He said communication restrictions had made it difficult to verify reports of arrests or determine the whereabouts of party representatives.

PTI has demanded that the federal government disclose the legal grounds, charges and procedures behind any detentions involving Afridi and other party leaders.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry acknowledged that some individuals had been detained because of the law-and-order situation but did not confirm whether Afridi was among them.

He said individuals not wanted in criminal cases would be released, while those facing charges would be dealt with according to the law.

Governor’s Rule Deepens KP Political Crisis

The uncertainty surrounding Afridi comes after President Asif Ali Zardari approved the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on October 11.

The federal government has defended the intervention on security grounds, while PTI argues that it undermines provincial autonomy and the mandate of the elected provincial government.

The constitutional intervention has intensified tensions at a time when the province is already confronting militant violence and political unrest.

Afridi had been leading PTI’s mobilisation towards Islamabad before the emergency was announced. His reported detention has now become another point of confrontation between the party and federal authorities.

Questions Remain Over Afridi’s Whereabouts

The immediate issue is whether Afridi has been formally arrested, placed under house arrest or subjected to another restriction on his movement.

PTI has demanded his release, but the absence of official confirmation leaves important questions unanswered about his legal status and location.

The uncertainty also extends to Junaid Akbar, Babar Saleem Swati and other PTI representatives whose reported detentions remain disputed or unverified.

The case has implications beyond the whereabouts of one political leader. It concerns the treatment of elected representatives, the use of preventive detention powers and the transparency of government action during an exceptional constitutional intervention.

For now, the central question remains unanswered: Where is Sohail Afridi, and under what legal authority, if any, is he being held?

Until authorities provide confirmation, PTI’s claims of his arrest and house detention must remain attributed rather than presented as established facts.
