Iran has said that any future agreement with Oman on shipping arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz will not lead to the immediate reopening of the strategic waterway, signalling that key political disagreements remain unresolved despite reports of diplomatic progress.
According to Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB, negotiations over future navigation arrangements are being conducted exclusively between Tehran and Muscat and are “not connected to the United States.” The remarks follow reports suggesting Iran and Oman are close to reaching an interim understanding on a new shipping corridor through the Strait.
Iranian officials stressed that even if an agreement is reached with Oman, the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed unless Tehran sees what it describes as a change in US behaviour and an end to alleged American violations. The broadcaster added that the reopening of the waterway depends on political conditions rather than the navigation agreement itself.
The comments contrast with recent statements from US President Donald Trump, who said Washington had held “very good discussions” with Iran and suggested negotiations were progressing toward an agreement. While Washington has reported direct discussions with Tehran, Iranian officials have not publicly confirmed a final agreement with the United States.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes, carrying a significant share of global oil exports. Any prolonged disruption continues to affect energy markets, shipping companies and regional security calculations.
Diplomatic efforts are expected to continue through Omani mediation, but neither side has announced a signed agreement, implementation timeline or confirmed reopening of the Strait. For now, commercial navigation remains heavily restricted as negotiations continue.
