Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has announced plans to stage sit-ins at 510 locations across Pakistan on August 7, escalating its campaign against the petroleum levy, fuel taxation and rising living costs.
JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said the demonstrations would remain peaceful but would involve blocking major interdistrict roads from 4pm. He said ambulances would be allowed to pass, while urging supporters across the country to participate in the coordinated protest campaign.
The party is demanding that the government reduce the price of petrol to Rs225 per litre. JI has linked high fuel prices to wider cost-of-living pressures, arguing that petroleum-related taxes ultimately increase transport, electricity and commodity costs for households and businesses.
Hafiz Naeem has also warned that attempts by authorities to prevent the demonstrations could result in the party expanding its campaign against the government. The planned mobilisation follows JI’s broader criticism of economic policies that it says place a disproportionate burden on ordinary consumers.
The scale of the planned demonstrations could create significant disruption if road blockades proceed as announced. Major intercity routes carry passenger traffic as well as freight, meaning prolonged closures could affect public transport, commercial deliveries, markets and evening commuters.
Fuel taxation remains a politically sensitive issue because changes at the pump can quickly filter through the wider economy. Higher transportation expenses can raise distribution costs for food and other essential goods, while businesses dependent on road freight face additional pressure on operating margins.
Authorities and commuters will therefore be watching developments closely from 4pm, particularly around major highways and interdistrict routes. Verified information on road closures, diversions and police deployments will be important as demonstrations get underway.
