At least 14 people, including police personnel, were martyred and at least 22 others injured after a suicide bomber targeted the entrance of Kabal Police Station in Swat district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on Sunday evening. The attack occurred near Kabal Chowk while hundreds of residents were participating in one of the region’s largest recent peace demonstrations, demanding stronger action against the resurgence of terrorism and lasting security across the valley.
According to police, the attacker attempted to enter the police station before being intercepted by officers stationed at the main gate. The bomber detonated the explosives at the entrance after being stopped, killing police officials and civilians nearby. Authorities believe the officer who confronted the attacker prevented an even greater tragedy by stopping him before he could reach the station compound.
The powerful explosion partially damaged the main gate of the police station and sent protesters and bystanders into panic. Rescue 1122 teams, ambulances, police and security personnel rushed to the scene, shifting the injured to Central Hospital Saidu Sharif and Kabal Hospital. Officials said several victims remained in critical condition as emergency treatment continued.
The bombing coincided with a major public rally where residents were calling for lasting peace, better security, protection for civilians and uninterrupted access to education for children. Protesters also alleged that militants were operating openly in mountainous areas while peaceful citizens continued to face restrictions. Those allegations reflected the views expressed during the demonstration.
Swat District Police Officer Umar Khan confirmed that officers intercepted the bomber before he reached the compound. Police immediately sealed the area while the Bomb Disposal Squad and forensic experts collected evidence. Authorities recovered the attacker’s severed head for identification, and preliminary investigations suggested he may have been an Afghan national, although officials stressed that this has not been confirmed. A search operation has also been launched to identify and arrest anyone who facilitated the attack.
President Asif Ali Zardari strongly condemned the bombing. Zardari directed authorities to ensure the best possible treatment for the injured and ordered a comprehensive investigation.

While Sharif reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eliminating terrorism. Naqvi praised the police officer who stopped the attacker, saying his sacrifice saved many lives. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and Chief Minister Sohail Afridi also denounced the attack, with Afridi seeking a report from the Inspector General of Police and pledging that those responsible would be brought to justice.
No group had claimed responsibility at the time of reporting. However, security officials and analysts suspect possible involvement of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) based on the group’s recent pattern of attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, although this has not been officially confirmed.
The bombing comes amid a deteriorating security situation in the province. According to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), terrorism-related deaths in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa rose from 75 in June to 154 in July, an increase of approximately 105 percent. Combined with recent attacks in Hangu, Bannu and near the Peshawar-Islamabad motorway, the latest bombing has intensified public concern over renewed militant activity in Swat and reinforced calls for stronger counterterrorism measures to prevent further violence.
