Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has launched nationwide demonstrations today, August 5, marking three years since the detention of former prime minister Imran Khan. The party says the protests are intended to demand his release and highlight what it describes as the need to restore democratic and constitutional rights.
The main gathering is expected near the Peshawar Motorway, where Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and other senior PTI leaders are scheduled to address supporters and announce the next phase of the party’s political campaign. PTI has instructed its regional organisations to hold demonstrations across the country, making the mobilisation one of its largest coordinated protest efforts in recent months.
In Rawalpindi, however, the district administration rejected PTI’s request to hold a rally at Liaquat Bagh, citing security arrangements related to Youm-e-Istehsal observances. Officials said law enforcement resources were already committed to public security duties, making it difficult to accommodate another major gathering.
Despite the refusal, PTI has maintained that its protest programme will continue. Party officials have also alleged that nine activists were arrested ahead of the demonstrations, describing the detentions as an attempt to discourage participation. Authorities have not publicly responded in detail to the party’s claims.
The demonstrations are being closely watched as a measure of PTI’s ability to mobilise supporters nationwide while operating under continued legal and political pressure. Security has been tightened in several cities, with police deployed around major roads and potential protest venues to maintain public order.
