Amazon in Talks to Buy AI Startup Decart for $7 Billion

Amazon is reportedly negotiating a deal worth approximately $7 billion to acquire Decart, a San Francisco-based artificial intelligence startup developing technology that helps AI models run faster across different computing chips.

According to The Wall Street Journal, which cited people familiar with the discussions, an agreement could be reached soon. However, negotiations remain ongoing, and the deal could still fall apart or attract competing offers.

If completed, the acquisition would become one of Amazon’s biggest investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure, giving the technology giant access to software designed to make expensive AI computing systems more efficient.

Why Amazon Wants Decart

Decart has attracted attention for solving one of the AI industry’s biggest challenges: the enormous computing power required to train and operate advanced models.

Its software allows developers to run AI workloads across different processors, including Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs), Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and Amazon’s custom Trainium chips.

Decart claims its optimization technology can make AI models run up to eight times faster using the same hardware.

For Amazon, which operates Amazon Web Services (AWS), the technology could help customers reduce computing costs while making its cloud services more competitive.

Decart is also developing AI world models called Lucy and Oasis. Lucy can process live video to show users wearing different clothing or accessories in real time, while Oasis generates artificial three-dimensional environments for applications including robotics and self-driving technology.

E-commerce company eBay is both an investor in Decart and a customer of its technology.

From a $4 Billion Startup to a Potential $7 Billion Deal

Founded in 2023 by Israeli engineers Dean Leitersdorf, Orian Leitersdorf and Moshe Shalev, Decart has grown rapidly.

The startup has raised more than $400 million from investors including Sequoia Capital, Benchmark and Radical Ventures.

In May 2026, Decart was valued at approximately $4 billion. Amazon’s reported $7 billion offer would represent a roughly 75 percent increase in its valuation within just a few months.

Amazon and Decart already have an established relationship. In 2025, AWS provided the startup with early access to its Trainium3 chip after discussions between the companies impressed Amazon’s team.

Anthropic and Nvidia Were Also Interested

Amazon is not the first technology company to explore acquiring Decart.

AI developer Anthropic reportedly considered purchasing the startup for approximately $6 billion. The company completed due diligence but ultimately decided against the acquisition, although future cooperation remains possible.

Other companies reportedly linked to Decart include Nvidia, cloud infrastructure provider Nebius and Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

The interest from multiple technology companies reflects the growing importance of software that can improve AI performance without requiring additional computing hardware.

What the Acquisition Could Mean for Amazon

Amazon has completed several major acquisitions in recent years, including its $8.45 billion purchase of MGM in 2022 and the roughly $11 billion Globalstar transaction announced earlier in 2026.

However, Decart represents a different opportunity.

Rather than acquiring entertainment content or expanding into another consumer-facing business, Amazon would be investing directly in the technology that powers artificial intelligence.

As demand for AI services grows, faster processing and lower computing costs are becoming increasingly important for cloud providers and businesses developing AI applications.

A successful acquisition could strengthen AWS’s position against competing cloud platforms while giving Amazon greater control over technologies designed to improve AI computing efficiency.

For now, the reported $7 billion deal remains under negotiation. Whether Amazon completes the acquisition or another buyer enters the picture, Decart’s rapid rise shows how valuable AI infrastructure technology has become.
